How to Have a Green and Eco-Friendly Happy Chrismas and New Year and Save Money
Merry Christmas and a Happy Green New Year. With the festive season racing towards us, apart from wondering about gifts, guests, breaks away and festive food, it is also a time to wonder how much all of this will cost. Sure, we all want to extend generosity and well being, but maybe in these economic times and for that matter environmental times, a thought to the planet doesn’t go astray.
Having a “green” Christmas isn’t about being stingy, but, it can save both money and ease your eco-guilt. If it comes to that, why not consider a few eco-friendly changes in lifestyle for the new year. To go even “light green” can make a considerable difference to your eco-footprint and yes- it can save money over the long term.
- Get kids involved in DIY Christmas decorations.
- Use reusable bags when you go grocery shopping.
- Try not to buy new napkins and tableware – dress up what you already have.
- Try to plan your meals and how you stock the fridge and freezer.
- Buy in bulk but make sure you can store the goods properly.
- Overstocking often leads to waste, if you have tasty leftovers – offer it to guests or even a homeless shelter.
- If you use purified water, buy the biggest containers you can or install a tap purifier
- Avoid over packaged items, you are simply going to throw away the packaging.
- Recycle your bottles, plastic and paper from the festivities.
- If you are buying new electrical equipment, check the power rating & buy energy efficient.
- Plan your shopping so as to combine car trips and cut down your fuel bill.
- Buy local produce where possible, it’s travelled less distance so has “burnt” less fuel.
- Rather than a holiday away, consider helping out with a community initiative.
- Do a home DIY project, save money and have fun.
- Ask yourself, Do I Really Need This? before you buy.
- Buying clothes – be cool and buy “retro” or “pre-loved” gear
- Give your home a “green” face lift and apply some energy saving measures.
- If you go away, turn off all appliances rather than leaving them on standby.
- Lights at Christmas are cheerful, but at least put them on a timer.
So, does it make a difference? Well, yes it does. Every bit of energy save is energy saved that cost you in some way. You may even set an example to others who see that you are saving, green and not “lost the plot”. Christmas is indeed about generosity among other things and sometimes, it can be generosity to yourself and family by enjoying a simpler occasion rather than an overindulgence that you will have to pay sooner or later. Love and good time in a family isn’t about how much you spend, its about how you spend your time and personal energy in caring. So – make it a happy, caring green Christmas and New Year.
