Is it possible to permanently put a layer of landscaping (not play) sand on the outer set of wooden stairs?
I know that sounds like a nutty idea, but it is what what I want, and for non-shelter and decorative reasons. I know that it can take years and years, but I do not mind reapplying. Also, I'd rather serious answers …. Yes, I know it's funny to tell me to use Elmer glue, but I need an answer. Thanks to all who take the time to reply! Ok, let me clarify, I want to be able to see the sand, and not just feel the sand. Any ideas? Yes, thanks, I know about the add in the sand, but the color of sand lost in the color of paint. I want the illusion steps which is made from sand.
Coincidentally, I just finished a project where I developed a technique to accomplish that very thing. Rustoleum and H & C to epoxy garage floor that is sold as a set and go on nice and thick, and dries like iron. Mix up a gallon (you must add your catalyst), paint on your steps nice and thick, thick and scatter Coating the sand on the wet epoxy. After the sand completely covered with epoxy, you can mash down without getting all gooey. When the epoxy sets, brush off loose material. If there are any lumps, take a brick and rub it around a bit to smooth out. I used this primer to woodpeckers from pecking on foam architectural accents, and it worked like charm. It actually makes a pretty nice finish, kind of like a shark's skin. And is very durable.
